A Blogging Obsession

My name is Vicky. I think I’m addicted to blogging.
I thought for so long about starting up a blog but was always hesitant. I thought it was something which only the cool kids did. As much as I wish that was me, sadly I’ve come to accept it’s not – I’m too socially shy!
I decided to bite the bullet just three weeks ago and launched Monkey's Mummy. There were many reasons why I decided now was the time. We are about to embark on a massive life change and I thought it would be good to have somewhere to log everything that happens. I also want to pursue writing as a career and thought this would be a good way to start.
But now, the bug has well and truly bitten me. I think about my blog all the time. It’s like I have another child – I keep telling my husband about all the new and smart things my lovely little blog has done.
I’ve been amazed and delighted that there are people beyond me and my immediate family who are logging on and having a read. But I’m lost as to whether I’m doing it right.
I’ve read a lot about how your pageview numbers shouldn’t count as a measure of success but then that brands etc. use it as a barometer as to whether you have a good blog which they want to work with.
So if anyone who has a blog is reading this then please let me know – how do you judge the success of your blog?

  1. Ha ha I tell my husband all the time the lovely things my blog has done. I have recently discovered badges/buttons. They are brilliant and decorate your blog nicely :) whilst supporting the ones you like! You should defo get one. Love the site. Keep on Blogging! x

  2. Will def look into badges and buttons. There feels like there is so much you can do and really so little time to do it all. Thank you for your feedback! x

  3. I only started my blog a few months ago so it's all new to me still but if I'm honest, i am measuring it's success via the following:

    1. Page views because whilst it isn't a perfect measure it is a measure and as you say, people seem to want to know!
    2. number of comments people leave - my reason for doing my blog is to talk to others and share experiences so everytime i get a comment I feel hugely excited and as you say, especially when they aren't from close family or friends
    3. twitter followers - if after I've blogged I get an increase in twitter follows even just 1 then I think that's a good sign
    4. Email followers (only just got the hang of this via feed burner to be honest
    5. If I'm proud of it - sad but true! :-)

As a newbie to blogging I definitely don't have any definitive answers but I just thought I'd share my ideas!

No thank you it's great to hear from a fellow newbie. Number 5 is very important and writing the blog is the first time I've done something just for me in a long time. I need to focus less on the numbers and more on the fun! x
